HW#28

Read chapter 20 and chapter 21 until the bottom of page 281 ("But Mr. Tate said, 'This court will come to order,'"). Imagine you are in the jury room after the witnesses' testimony has been given and the lawyers have made their closing statements. Write a script of the discussion the jurors are having as they debate their decision on the verdict. What would be reasons jurors might argue for a guilty verdict or a not guilty verdict? In the end, what do you think will be their verdict: guilty, not guilty, or will they not be able to come to a unanimous (12-0) decision (this is called a hung jury)? You may need to do a little research to find out which kinds of people were allowed to serve on juries in Alabama in the 1930s to understand these jurors. At least one FULL page (you probably will need longer). Then finish reading chapter 21.
